brainwashed dot com
i have done posts before linking to rad things on this site [see ted leo] but i have spent the better part of my day sifting through this site and its fucking big. so much new content its great.
its really hard to get this website in scope because its pretty vast. but lets just say its a music site. thats fairly vague enough not to norrow the focus.
lets start with the section called The Brain. its not your average music webzine. weekly updates about various bands is great but the cherry for this site is the Eye, video interviews and live performances from all your fave or soon to be fave underground bands.
They also have a section where they host websites for various bands. if you check the info section you can see it started because
"we wanted to honor some of our favorite bands with websites. These bands either had a lousy idol worshipping fan site, a corporate site which ignored a band's career outside of the label or no web site at all. "
on top of that they have a radio stream that works in most mp3s players that can do streams, a list of store where you can get brainwashed merch, and music from likewise underground labels as well as compilations from the official Brainwashed Label.
all in all this is a great site to discover new music and find out more information on bands you already like. Brainwashed.com paired with Epitonic.com can really take hours and hours out of your day when applied properly.
ps- check out my new fave band Out Hud.

Wooster Collective : Nick Zaremba Interview
its kick ass that nick is getting some coverage over at wooster collective. that site is just the best. you may notice any good question i asked nick was totally lifted from the wooster question template. yeah im not the raddest at that shit. but high fives to NZ.
also on the same day wooster posted some pics of the cloud signs that have been popping all over boston. i have an idea who this is but im not blowing up anyone's anonymity.

WHALE RIDER the movie
if you have not seen it yet. i highly suggest renting Whale Rider. its just an amazing film. the closest ive come to crying from a film in a while. not to say its depressing, just the opposite in fact. its just really good. i'd say its a good date movie or alone movie. even kids may like it even though some of the shit would be over thier heads. im not going to review it here because i would not do a good enough job but i think i have seen more films than the average person and that my taste in movies is decent so me just saying that this is a great movie should be worth something. sure you may not think its a good as i do but you will like it. if you watch it and dont like it, get back to me about it because i would like to hear from the one retard out there that did not like this movie. and that person can go rent 2 fast 2 furious.
so after posting the article on the Russian Doll show i found out that nick also has a shirt design collabloration coming out of Tank Theory that he did with another artist, 5003.

so go to Tank Theory and buy that shirt.
after seeing all this shit hes in i contacted him to see if he would answer some questions for the site, so here it is:
How did you get hooked up with tank theory and 5003?
we both knew the co owner of the company thru mutual friends and he is really into street art, hip hop, graff etc........so we were like we need exposure and he needed new art, so it hooked up.
what was it like doing a collaboration piece for a shirt that would be mass produced?
doing a collaboration peice to be mass produced was exactly what i've wanted to do for a while now. doing a design and a company with a big budget putting it in stores across the world is so good..the only way to get big exposure....and thats what i need as an underground artist.
so i approached it with 5003 in a simple way....come up with a design to just represent each of our styles.....as of now....so 5003 did the collagey background with the 5003 and the diagrams, then i dropped some scripts and some characters that is fairly cohesive with what i normally do. so it is a distinctive design that you can tell who's who thru...

you do your work on stickers, hand bags canvas walls and now shirts, do you favor any one over another?
well, i cant really say what is better, they are all neccessary for me to explore. i dont want to be trapped into anything. i like to work from my sketchbook journals and translate my styles and ideas thru all different mediums and try to make all cohesive. however ya know....stickers get me up on streets, bags get me up on girls walkin around, canvas do their job, walls to their job, and t's do there job as well....as soldiers...
whats your ideal enviorment to do your work?
ideally, the street just to satisfy myself......so much trash, so many nooks and crannies, so much of an audience, no mediation. but i would also love to work just in a big studio designing graphics for skateboards, or girls t's.....or just making huge paintings.........ahhhh
what inspires you?
right now...listening to The Diplomats and Juelz Santana inspire me along with Portishead. also watching MTV inspires me to be more of a creative entrepenuer. walking in the city inspires me. My friends inspire me. Mister Never, Edward Martinez, Paul H., Clay Jiggits.
what do you have planned next?
upcoming plans.........promoting The Russian Doll Show....(www.emartinez.com) as it travels across the usa.....working on collaboration projects entitled " Lil Never" with Mister Never due out in Spring 2004, more tote bags, getting my site up.
anything you want people to check out?

so it has come to my attention that there is a new gallery show tour that is opening up december 6th at the Hope Street Gallery in brooklyn NYC featuring craplog favorites such as nick zaremba, MCA of evil design, mister reusch, and kozyndan.
the show looks to be really interesting.
"Russian Nesting dolls (or Matryoshka dolls) combine beauty and intrigue. They lead two very separate lives, one as little statues on display, the other as interactive toys; each one opening up revealing a smaller one inside, creating a family of pear shaped characters.
The idea for this show resulted from the discovery that the dolls could be purchased in their raw wood state, unpainted. The challenge was to encourage artists who typically work 2-dimensionally to cross over to 3-dimensional work. The artists selected to participate in the show were chosen based on their artistic merit and enthusiasm. I also looked for work that lends itself to the ideas surrounding Matryoshka dolls, such as storytelling, and creating art in series. They range from commercial illustrators to fine artists, to graffiti writers, describing a wide range of styles and ideas."- Hustler of Culture
check it out when it comes to a city close to you. and drop by the website of the shows curator Eddie Martinez.
